what does it mean ? this x3 - x5

for example if
mobA spoil 1-2 animal bone i can get 3 - 10 (3*1 - 5*2)   ?
mobB spoil 1-15 animal bone i can get 3 - 75  ?

sometime i get 1 or 2 items from mobs like that
so what is this x3 for ?
